Guide to Baking Pantry Problems

How long has your baking powder been sitting on the shelf? Here’s how to tell if your baking pantry items are still okay to use, and some ways to make them last longer!

Is the baking soda still good to use?

Pour ¼ teaspoon of vinegar into a ½ cup of hot tap water. Then add ¼ teaspoon of baking soda. If it fizzes, it’s still good to use.

Is the baking powder still fresh?

Add ½ teaspoon to a bowl of warm water. It should fizz moderately if it’s still fresh.

My baking chocolate has a white film on it, can i still use it?

White film appears when sugar or fat separates from chocolate. Flavor doesn’t get affected, and it’s still safe to use.

How can I tell if nuts or almond flour have gone bad?

Nuts contain oils that hasten rancidity. If they smell off, then they’ve probably gone bad. Freeze them to maximize shelf life.

How long can I use sugar?

Technically, sugar never spoils, but it’s recommended that granulated sugar be discarded after two years.

What should i do when my honey has crystallized?

Honey doesn’t spoil, but it does crystallize. Microwave the jar for 30 seconds or warm it in a pan of simmering water to soften it.
