Preheat oven to 350°F/177°C. Grease and flour a 9-inch round pan. Set aside.

In a saucepan, combine dates, sugar and water. Cook until thick. Add nuts. Cool and set aside.

In a bowl, combine the cake mix, butter and egg. Press mixture evenly in the prepared pan. Pour dates mixture. Bake in a preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until cake is done. Cool.

Prepare Icing: In a mixer bowl, beat egg whites with cream of tartar. Add sugar, beat until mixture reaches stiff peak stage. Spread meringue on filling forming spikes. Quickly bake just until golden brown
