This Summer, take your 13 to 19 year-olds on another fantastic kitchen adventure with Flavors of the World – A Teen Cooking and Baking Camp 2015 (April 27 to 30 and May 26 to 29) hosted by Ms. Mercedes Camacho Peterson.
Take a trip around the world and learn about the history and cuisines of Japan, Italy and Spain and make colorful pastry creations like rainbow cakes and cupcakes, doughnuts and whimsical fondant sugar cookies!
Going Japanese! Learn to make Japanese specialties like Tempura, Beef Misono and Chahan(Japanese Fried Rice). Make ice cream from scratch and assemble an Ice cream Mochi. Create whimsical sugar fondant cookies constructed from sugar cookies, fondant and royal icing. On this first day teens will also learn basic concepts like Hygeine, Food Storage, Kitchen and baking equipment and cooking terms.
Revel in the color and vibrancy of Spanish cuisine and learn to make Tapas like Tortilla Española and Buñuelos de Chorizo (Chorizo Puffs) Learn an heirloom recipe: Iberian Chicken. Have fun making colorful Marzipan figures and learn to stack and layer an impressive rainbow fondant cake and cupcake.
Hop onto Italy and construct a pizza and make Carbonara! Discover the wonders of Yeast by making yeast-risen pastries like doughnuts, Italian bomboloni (filled doughnut holes) and cinnamon rolls!
The culminating activity is a Maya Teen Bake-Off inspired by the Great British bake off – the task is to complete a whimsical 2-layer pastry tableau out of the pastries they have learned during the Teen workshop like a fondant layered cake and cupcake, Marzipan figures, sugar fondant cookies, doughnuts and cinnamon rolls. Criteria wll be creativity,technical ability (are there layers present?), taste and aesthetic. Grand prize will be cookbooks for the winning team and a free class at the Maya Kitchen.
