Many of us have started cooking at home, but how do you manage when you can only go to the supermarket every so often? Whenever a recipe calls for an ingredient you don’t have, try these cooking substitutions!
Cooking Ingredient Substitutions:
All Spice (1 tsp) – ½ tsp cinnamon + ¼ tsp ginger + ¼ tsp cloves
Garlic (1 clove) – ⅛ tsp garlic powder, ¼ tsp instant mince garlic
Freshly-grated ginger root (1 tsp) – ½ tsp ground ginger
Onion (1 cup) chopped – 1 cup chopped green onions; 1 cup chopped leeks; ¼ cup dried minced onion; ¼ cup onion powder
Beef or chicken broth (1 cup) – 1 bouillon cube + 4 cups boiling water
Dry bread crumbs (1 cup) – 1 cup crushed cornflakes; 1 cup ground oats; 1 cup crushed potato chips
Hot pepper Sauce (1 tsp) – ¾ cayenne pepper + 1 tsp vinegar
Sour cream (1 cup) – 1 cup plain or Greek yogurt; ¾ cup buttermilk and ⅓ cup butter
Rice wine vinegar – apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar
Lemon juice – Lime juice, orange juice or half as much white vinegar
Toasted sesame oil – 1 tbsp neutral tasting oil (grapeseed, canola) + ¼ tsp toasted sesame seeds
Oyster sauce – 1 tbsp soy sauce + ¼ tsp sugar
Chili garlic sauce – Sriracha + freshly minced garlic
Fresh herbs (1 tbsp) – 1 tsp (chopped or whole leaf) dried herbs
Lemon zest (1 tsp) – ½ tsp lemon extract; 2 tbsp lemon juice
Corn syrup (1 cup) – 1 cup granulated sugar + ¼ cup water
Honey (1 cup) – 1 ¼ cup granulated sugar, ¼ cup water
